Querrey, Bryans Conduct White House QuickStart Clinic For Let’s Move! Campaign

The USTA today announced that it conducted a tennis clinic featuring the QuickStart play format on the White House South Lawn alongside USTA Chairman of the Board and President Lucy S. Garvin, World Team Tennis Washington Kastles owner, Mark Ein, world No. 20 Sam Querrey, and doubles team Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan on Tuesday, August 3. The event was part of the South Lawn Series, a summer-long series of events that brings local children, sports leagues and community programs together to the South Lawn in support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative to combat childhood obesity.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to showcase all the benefits of the sport of tennis,” said Garvin. “Tennis is a lifetime sport and can help keep people of all ages active and healthy. The USTA is proud to join the First Lady and her Let’s Move! initiative, and we are thrilled that she recognises the positive impact that tennis can have on children.”

The clinic ran on two 78’ courts constructed on the South Lawn that housed eight 36’ courts specifically designed for children aged 10-and-under. USTA instructors partnered up with tennis players Sam Querrey and Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan to lead 100 local Washington youth from USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning chapters including the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation, CREATE Tennis, the Southeast Tennis & Learning Center and the Junior Tennis Champions Center in a QuickStart clinic that demonstrated ways for kids to get 60 minutes of active play per day. Developed to keep kids active and expose them to tennis at an early age, the QuickStart play format provides kids with an exciting introduction to tennis by scaling down the game to better fit the needs of young children by utilising smaller balls, racquets and courts.

“The QuickStart play format is the ideal way to get kids involved in the sport of tennis and start them on the path of using sports to remain active,” said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. “By utilising age appropriate equipment and shorter courts, the QuickStart play format makes tennis more fun for kids which can lead to a lifetime of activity.”

Tuesday’s event marked the second time tennis clinics featuring the QuickStart play format appeared at the White House. The USTA, along with Gigi Fernandez and Billie Jean King, previously took part in a tennis demonstration during the White House’s annual Easter Egg Roll, which included the participation of more than 36,000 children.

Querrey is coming off his sixth career title after winning the Farmers Classic, an Olympus US Open Series event, in Los Angeles last weekend, and the Bryans won their 62nd doubles title at the Farmers Classic to break the record for the most team doubles titles.

Other organisations who have joined with the Let’s Move! initiative include the National Football League, Major League Baseball, U.S. Olympic Committee and the U.S. Soccer Foundation.Related Topics:

2010 Bryans Defeat Rivals To Tie All-Time Team Titles Record

Americans Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan captured a record-equaling 61st doubles title together Sunday as they defeated rivals Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tennis tournament.

Appearing in their 99th tour-level doubles final, the Bryans tied Australians Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde’s Open Era record of team titles.  Fifteen of their 61 titles have come at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments.

“There are a lot of opportunities out there to get that 62, but it would be more special at a Grand Slam," said Bob Bryan, with Roland Garros just a week away. "We’re just really happy to win this one right now against such a great team; one of our rivals of the past three years.  It feels awesome to share a record with the Woodies; those guys were our idols.  We were lucky to grow up when they were at their best and we learned a lot from them; they played a beautiful game of doubles.  To be mentioned in the same sentence as those guys is everything to us.  It’s what makes number 61 so special.”

"The Woodies were fantastic," concurred Mike Bryan. "They have a lot of records.  It’s nice to share one with them.  But you can’t compare it; we’re totally different teams.  They played a beautiful brand of doubles, as Bob said.  They didn’t have the big serves, but they were so smart out there.  We’ve learned a lot of things from them about poaching.  They had a better finals record; when they got to a finals match they usually won it.  They were clutch players.  They’re great guys too; fantastic players and even better guys off the court."

By virtue of earning 1000 ATP World Tour Doubles Ranking points as winners, the Bryans will also move back to No. 1 in the ATP Doubles Team Rankings on Monday.  They were crowned ATP World Tour Champions last year as they finished atop the ATP Doubles Team Rankings for the fifth time after victory at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.   They have also been voted the "ATP Fan Favorite Doubles Team" for the past 5 years in a row - - - every year that they have had the award.

It is the second time this season that the top two teams have clashed, with the Bryans also triumphing in the Australian Open final at the start of the year to win their eighth Grand Slam title.

It is the fifth tour-level title that the Bryans have won this season (a perfect 5-0 finals record) and their second straight success on clay.  Now riding an eight match win streak, two weeks ago they won an all-American final against John Isner and Sam Querrey to lift the trophy at the Italian Open in Rome, adding to their successes earlier in the season in Houston (also on clay) and Delray Beach (on hard court).

In a strong-serving performance from the Americans, they were not broken throughout the 55-minute clash, with Nestor and Zimonjic not able to make many returns.  The 32-year-old twins broke in the sixth game of the first set as they secured a one-set lead and established an early lead in the second set by breaking serve to lead 3-1.

The top-seeded Nestor and Zimonjic engineered their only three break points of the clash in the eighth game of the second set, but Bob Bryan saved all three on his serve to hold for 5-3 and Mike Bryan then produced a love service game to seal victory.

The Bryans were contesting their fourth Madrid final and lifted the trophy for the third time, having previously triumphed in 2006 (d. Knowles-Nestor) and 2007 (d. Fyrstenberg-Matkowski).   Excerpted from ATPTennis.Com.

Fast Facts:

***  The Bros. are taking an early flight out today to get to Dusseldorf to compete in the ATP World Team Championships with teammates Sam Querrey and John Isner.

***  Wins for Mike 'n Bob this past week in Madrid included: Benjamin Becker (Germany)-Marco Chiudinelli (Switzerland), 6-1, 7-6; Mariusz Fyrstenberg-Marcin Matkowski (Poland), 6-3, 6-4; Marcel Granollers (Spain)-Viktor Toicki (Serbia), 6-0, 4-6, 10-2; and Daniel Nestor (Canada)-Nenad Zimonjic (Serbia), 6-3, 6-4.

***  Mike and Bob sure appreciated the raucous support of several family members this past week.  Helping them win the title were Uncle John Bryan, and cousins Carl Bryan and Bryan Gerhart.  Former tour doubles star and the great coach of the UC Santa Barbara tennis team, Marty Davis and his lovely wife, Jill, and their son were there in Madrid rooting the guys on as well.

***  The twins are getting great comments on their sharp K-Swiss tennis outfits.  The K-Swiss shoes are super comfortable and other companies are starting to copy their fabulous design in men's shorts.  Special thanks to Erik the big E Vervloet and personable Ivette Ramos and the rest of this creative company for all their special help and support.

***  The Bros. also want to thank their hard working and great coach, David MacPherson, for all the scouting and game plan prep and work with them on the court each day.  He is not only their coach but also a great pal.  While Mike and Bob are good friends of Laker Coach Phil Jackson and are huge Laker fans, Davo loves those Phoenix Suns.  Who plays in the NBA Western Division finals starting tonight?  Yeah, Lakers vs. Suns.

***  The Tennis Channel carried the Madrid Doubles final and did their usual wonderful job.  We all feel that the TC is the best force we have for tennis in the United States.  We say thanks and well done to Ken Solomon and David Egdes.  And commentator and former tour doubles star, Robbie Koenig really knows doubles and the players and he gives viewers interesting insights and background info.

***  Coach Bryan once again enjoyed emceeing the classy and fun Beverly Hills Invitational on Sunday.  For the first time in the 15 year history of the event, host Geoff Palmer combined with former UCLA #1, Eric Taino, to win the Championship.  Palmer's Mansion is stunning and the party after the event was off the charts, while Taino is a long time competitor and friend of Mike and Bob's.  Another UCLA star and tour player and coach, Tony Graham, was a finalist and served as tournament director.  Other tennis stars in attendance were Brian Teacher, Jeff Tarango, Wade McGuire, John Letts, Nels Van Patten, Doug Adler, Kent Seton, Lev Shvarts, and Gene Malin, and rock star Gavin Rossdale reached the semis, while comedian Jon Lovitz also enjoyed the day.  Lovitz has played in many of the Bros. charity exos and Rossdale said he hopes to come up to hit with the guys and play some music the next time they are in town.  Tennis producer and director extraordinaire, Harold Hecht and his wife, Tiffany, and his three cute as can be children were there and enjoying the beautiful grounds and all the activities.

***  Coach B travels to Chicago later this week to do several clinics and talks at the beautiful Ontwensia Country Club.  Dynamic head pro, Rod Workman, will keep him busy and even is bringing in some top local musicians to join Wayne in a rockin' gig after the banquet on Saturday Night.

***  Mike 'n Bob also would like to thank Prince for all their steadfast support.  Since switching to their "favorite playing racket of all time", the Prince EXO3 Ignite Team 95s, the twins have won 6 of their last 12 tournaments.  Prince execs George Napier and John Embree have been 100% behind the guys and promo director Zach Perles has written to say there is a great new Bryan Bros. Prince Poster coming out to commemorate the Bros. new doubles record.

***  The Bryans are helping host the Groovin' in the Grove for Gracie at the Camarillo Oak Grove Park, on Saturday, May 29, from 3:00 to dusk.  Gracie Garcia, a long time employee at the Cabrillo Racquet Club, needs funds for a liver treatment.  Several of the top SoCal bands, including the Estrada Brothers and the Wayne Bryan Band, along with famed singer Rosemary Butler, will perform.  The response has been overwhelming and the the park will be packed for this gala event.

***  A long time friend of the Bryans and a great supporter of Mike and Bob, Bob McCampbell just had heart surgery and will be returning home soon.  We all wish Bob a speedy recovery.

***  Coach B hosted a Croquet War & BBQ last Saturday.  Top three finishers were Wayne Bryan-John McCampbell, Andy Di-Jimmy Wolff, and Tom Bruno-Gary CuocoCuoco complained long and hard that he "nicked the stick" at the raucous and caustic and exciting finish.  Cuoco's talented daughter, Kaley, is the star of the hugely popular series the Big Bang Theory.  Kaley, a much better sport than her dad, besides being a great and oh so funny actress, is a very fine tennis player, horseback rider, and drummer and is very close with the Bros. and the entire Bryan family and grew up taking tennis lessons from Kathy.  She has played many charity tennis exos with Mike and Bob.

*** Thanks for your support!

2010 - 60th Career Win with Italy Open Title

In an all-American final at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tournament, the Bryans defeated their pals and Davis cup teammates John Isner and Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-3 in just 49 minutes to capture their fourth tour-level title of the season.

“It’s getting pretty close now (to the Open Era record)," said Mike Bryan. "Already four titles this year, so the next one’s going to be the big one.  It’s going to be a big final, a lot of nerves.  We’re hoping to tie it before we get out of Europe.  We don’t want to get the monkey on our back and have to be thinking about it, so we want to do it as quick as possible.

“It’s huge for us to be considered a great team like the Woodies.  We’re hoping to do it.  Probably Wimbledon would be the best place to do it in because that’s on TV live back in the States, Centre Court match, that would be exciting."

In the first all-American final in Rome in the Open Era, the Bryans swiftly secured the opening set with two service breaks in the fourth and eighth games.  They then closed out victory in the second set with a break of serve in the eighth game before Mike Bryan served out to 15.  The Bryans were contesting the final at the Foro Italico for the fifth time.  They finished runner-up in 2005, 2007 and 2009 and captured the title in 2008 (d. Nestor-Zimonjic).

The Bryans, who celebrated their 32nd birthday on Thursday, have a perfect 4-0 record in tour-level finals this season after triumphing at the Australian Open in January, Delray Beach in February and Houston on clay last month.  They improved to a 14-12 record in Masters 1000 finals.

“John and Sam are great guys.  Two of our best friends on tour," complimented Mike Bryan.  "We were joking that they’re going after our Davis Cup spot.  They’re the future of American tennis.  They’re going to have bright futures.  With their weapons they can do singles and doubles.  They want to go to London and make the Masters (Barclays ATP World Tour Finals) in doubles and I think they’re going to do it.”  Excerpted from ATP Staff reports.

Fast Facts:

*** Other wins for the Bros. at the Italian Open included:  Frantisek Cermak (Czech Republic)-Michal Mertinak (Slovakia), 6-4, 6-1; Nicolas Almagro-Marcel Granollers (Spain), 6-3, 3-6, 10-6;  Lukasz Kubot (Poland)-Oliver Marach (Austria), 6-1, 6-2; and John Isner-Sam Querrey (USA), 6-2, 6-3.

***  Mike 'n Bob won their semis and finals both in 49 minutes, losing a total of just 8 games in their last two matches.

*** The twins, in a funny way, would like to say thanks to the Italian Triumvirate of Jimmy Gucciardo, Tomas Bruno, and Gary Cuoco.  When Mike and Bob were just little guys, these three always talked about the Italian Open being the greatest of all titles - - - and told the youngsters that it was even bigger than Wimbledon or the US Open or the Davis Cup.  They motivated and inspired the Bros. to always play this event and try to win it - - - and now they have been in five finals there in Rome, winning it twice.  On their Mom Kathy's due date when she was pregnant, she and Wayne played and beat Gucciardo and Bruno in a close match on the center court at Cabrillo, while Bruno kept telling Gucciardo to drop shot and lob Kathy . . .

*** The Bros. are off this week and then will play Madrid and the Dusseldorf World Team Cup, before playing the French Open in Paris.  For the World Team Cup the Bryans will play with Isner and Querrey.

*** Thanks to the great Tennis Channel for televising the final and we have received so many e mails from friends and fans who enjoyed watching the match.

*** Two weeks ago, Coach Bryan spoke to juniors, parents and coaches at the Easter Bowl in Palm Springs.  He appeared for Prince and he was assisted warmly by Max Brownlee and Peg Connor.  He also did some music there with his pal and drummer, Jimmy Wolff.

*** Coach Bryan spoke at the astoudingly classy and beautiful Hillcrest Country Club last Tuesday Night.  Nick Getz does a fabulous job there and he could not have been kinder or more hospitable.  He played at San Diego State and is the son of jazz legend Stan.

*** For the past four days Coach B has emceed and done clinics at the Champions Series Event in Boston with the likes of Jim Courier, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, and Matt Wilander.  It was a fantastic and exciting week thanks to Jon Venison and his winning staff.  While there, Coach Bryan also worked with the Harvard Women's Team on their doubles.  The Team is ranked #41 in the US and #2 in the Ivy League and their coach, Tracy Green was on the US National Junior Team with Mike 'n Bob and is a long time pal.  She is doing a terrific job for the Crimson.  Thanks also to Harvard Men's Coach, Dave Fish, for being so kind and hospitable in hosting Champions Series clinics and a pro am at his best of all indoor facilities.

*** Week before last he spoke and did clinics in Corpus Christie.  He was so impressed with the Tennis Success program headed up by the dynamic and hard working Ronald Elizando.  The kids there are doing great things there with their tennis and academics.

*** On Monday, Coach B will do clinics and talks and Legg Mason promo events in Washington DC and Bethesda.

*** On Saturday, May 29, from 2:00-7:30, Coach Bryan is helping stage Groovin' at the Grove, a fundraiser for Gracie Garcie to help her raise funds for her liver disease treatment.  The event featuring the areas top bands including the Wayne Bryan Band and the Pasta People will be held at the Camarillo Oak Grove Park.  Kristin Loft and Kathy Bryan are working hard to make this event fun and successful.

*** Other charity events this Fall for the Bryan Brothers Foundation include:  the Spanish Hills Country Club Pro Am and Exhibition on Saturday, Sept. 25, headed up by Dave McKinney.  The Bryan Brothers Grand Slam Jam will be held at the Malibu Racquet Club on Saturday, October 23, and will also feature an Exo and Pro Am and the gala night of music will be held at a club in Hollywood, tba.  Driving forces behind this event are: big time music execs Bill Vuylsteke, Jonathan Mchugh, Sean McCarthy and Richard Bondroff of the Bogart Pediatric Cancer Research Program.  Former tour player and club GM, Trey Walke, and tennis pro, John McCampbell have also been very gracious and helpful.

*** On a sad note, the Bros. have dedicated this title to Bobby Morin, a family friend, who passed away last week after a long and wonderful life.  He was a movie producer who had a heart of gold, a ready smile, fabulous sense of humor and he was a man who cared about others and always had a quip and positive word to say.  He was always behind Mike and Bob every step of the way and he loved his tennis.  We send along our most heartfelt sympathy to his wife Audrey.  Their relationship was an inspiration to us all . . .

2010 HOUSTON TITLE - April 2010

Top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan won back-to-back US Men's Clay Court Championship crowns in Houston Saturday to move to within two titles of equaling the all-time doubles titles record.

The Bryans won the match, 6-3, 7-5, over Australian Stephen Huss and South African Wesley Moodie, a team that won Wimbledon in 2005.

"This event was loaded with top teams - not necessarily the Top 8 but a lot of Grand Slam champions in this field," said Mike Bryan. "We feel glad to get out of this tournament with a title; it really bodes well for the upcoming clay court season for us."

The Bryans' third title in four years in Houston was their 59th tournament victory, leaving them just two shy of the record 61 team titles won by Australian duo Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde. "Fifty-nine - it's a big number and yeah, we're looking at 61," said Bob Bryan. "I think we can conceivably shoot that down in the next year if we keep playing well.  But who knows?  We'll cherish every title that we get."

Mike added, "The Woodies are the best and have always been great role models for us.  And we admire and respect them and their record and what they have meant to the sport and to doubles." Earlier in the day on Center Court, the Bryans were presented with the Ernest Langston Sportsmanship trophy, awarded annually to players who demonstrate great sportsmanship during the tournament.  The award is named for Ernest Langston, who served as River Oaks International Tournament Chairman from 1946-56.

"We like playing here - this is a beautiful club with so much history," said Mike Bryan of the River Oaks Country Club. "We've had a fun week; I wish we could be here every week."  Excerpted from the ATP WEB Site.  All photos courtesy of © Aaron M. Sprecher.

*** Following the doubles final award ceremony, young Jack Smith came out to present a check for $5,000 to the Bryan Brothers Foundation on behalf of his late brother Alex.  Alex had become a good friend to Mike and Bob the past two years as he battled cancer.  The Bros. first got to know this delightful young man on a Make A Wish visit to see them play in Shanghai.  He also came to root them on at the Davis Cup Match against Switzerland in Birmingham and he sat on the bench there with Jack and the team and he was also at Wimbledon with them last year.  On the microphone Bob said, "No one knew or loved tennis more than Alex.  He was a great friend and we really enjoyed getting to know him and we were inspired by him."  Mike added, "He was really a cool guy and he was so courageous.  He was also funny and very likable.  Now his brother Jack will carry on for him and he's already playing some good tennis and we hit with him on Monday."  Alex and Jack's wonderful father, David was also there and spoke beautifully about Alex and about brothers.  Bryan Brothers Foundation Funds are used to help children in need in various ways.

*** The Bryan Bros. Band, featuring David Baron, had two big gigs in H Town.  They played a gala sold out party for the River Oaks Country Club on Thursday Night, with famed Texas drummer Joe DeLeon playing with the band and Tracy Park and Benny Rod doing the sound.  After wining the title on Saturday Night, the guys hustled over and played a gig at the Alvaro Trullenque Mansion.  What a beautiful home and what a fabulous evening.

*** They played all four of their matches in the prime evening slot and got lots of fan support in a week in which the tournament set a new record for attendance.  It was especially great to see so many juniors and High School Teams and Junior Team Tennis squads in attendance.  The doubles final was telecast by the great Tennis Channel (Ted Robinson and Jimmy Arias in the booth, and produced and directed by Harold Hecht and Bob Whyley) and will be shown again throughout the week - - - check your local listings for times.

*** Mike and Bob enjoyed reuniting in H Town with their long time pal and Stanford teammate, Ali Ansari.  They also enjoyed spending time with Bobby Agosto.

*** Special thanks to Van Barry and his staff and volunteers and the members of the River Oaks Country Club for all they did to make the US Claycourt Championships such a winning event.  And we so greatly appreciate Gilly Agosto who headed up Transportation.   She did a beautiful job and the drivers could not have been nicer or more helpful.  We must also give a tip of the tennis cap to the award winning tennis writer, Dale Robertson, of the Houston Chronicle, for his great and insightful coverage of the event.  We also enjoyed working with our pal and PR/Media expert, Pete Holterman.

2010 DELRAY BEACH CHAMPIONSHIP

Top-seeded Americans Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan took sole possession of the No. 2 spot on the list of Open Era doubles titles champions, after defending their title at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships with a 6-3, 7-6(3) win over German Philipp Marx and Slovakian Igor Zelenay on Sunday.

The Bryans’ 58th team title moved them ahead of Americans Peter Fleming-John McEnroe and South Africans Bob Hewitt-Frew McMillan, with each of those pairs winning 57 titles, and placed them just three back of Australians Todd Woodbridge-Mark Woodforde’s record mark.

"It’s pretty cool to be on our own,”
said Mike Bryan. “I’m sure they’re not going to get any easier.  You feel a little more extra pressure because everyone’s talking about it, we’re even thinking about it now.  We’re in this final, we see this on paper, it’s a pretty good matchup for us ranking-wise, it’s just a good shot at a title.
"We want to break the record.”

The Bryans broke Marx and Zelenay once from five chances in the opening set and fought off three break points faced on serve to close out the straight-sets win in 69 minutes.  The Americans were contesting their third straight final at the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tennis tournament, having reached the final in 2008 and winning the title last year, defeating Marcelo Melo-Andre Sa, of Brazil.

They improved to an 11-2 season mark with their second title of the year.  They kicked off the 2010 campaign by winning the Australian Open for the fourth time over rivals Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic in the finals.  It was their eight Grand Slam Championship and they have been in a record setting sixteen Grand Slam Finals.

Mike Bryan said about chasing the all-time doubles titles record this season: “We’re going to try not to worry about it.  We have goals to be No. 1, and to be No. 1 you have to win titles.”

In 2009, they clinched the ATP World Tour Doubles Champions title for the fifth time in seven years, tying Woodbridge and Woodforde for most year-end No. 1 finishes.

The 31-year-old American twins celebrated another milestone Saturday with their semi-final victory, becoming the first team in the Open Era to win 600 matches together.  "It's a special milestone for us," Mike Bryan said. "To play this long together and still be doing it with 600 wins is quite an accomplishment.  It's good to do it in Delray, a place we like coming to, and where American fans can support us."  Excerpted from the ATP WEB Site.
